Several years ago, a friend I trust recommended the novel The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I meant to read it--instead put it on a shelf, set something atop it, forgot about it. When finally it resurfaced during some housekeeping rampage, I decided to venture through its pages to see what I would find:

- I found an unusual narrator--Death, who is fascinated by color.
- I found young girl, Liesel, who indeed steals books.
- I found Germany in the ravages of WWII--a family living in fear, a secret Jew, a book whose print is reimagined to tell a new story.
- I found lyrical writing that is so beautiful at times I wanted to copy the pages.
- I found compassion, strength, courage, love, friendship, hope, even humor at times.
